Formats

There are several formats for e-books and audiobooks. This guide explains which one is suitable for what.

1. E-books

There are many e-book formats. Here we explain the most common ones and especially those we offer.

Formats are split into two main groups: fixed and flowing:

  • Fixed include PDF, where the whole e-book has a fixed layout exactly as designed. It is not ideal for smaller readers or phones.
  • Flowing include EPUB, MOBI, AZW3 and others. Their big advantage is flexible text display, so reading is more comfortable and adapts better to phones, tablets and e-readers.

EPUB

An open format supported by most readers (see Where to read e-books). EPUB supports both fixed and flowing layouts.

More information can be found on Wikipedia: wikipedia.org/wiki/EPUB.

Kindle

Kindle now also supports this format, but with a caveat. If you send books via Send-to-Kindle, you need EPUB. If you transfer books over cable (for example via Calibre), MOBI is still used.

MOBI

A format created by Amazon for Kindle readers. MOBI is similar to EPUB but proprietary, so mainly Kindle devices support it. MOBI supports only flowing layout.

This is still a frequently used format on Kindle when transferring books by cable. For Send-to-Kindle, EPUB is now required.

PDF

PDF supports only fixed layout, but on the other hand it allows direct annotations on pages.

Miguel lets you choose PDF size based on where you want to read it.

2. Audiobooks

Audiobooks are usually distributed as a set of chapter audio files, most commonly MP3. From us, you receive all MP3 files packaged in a ZIP archive together with attachments.
